SUMMARY:PlayLab: Kitchen Party
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Acadian Day in PlayLab with the energy of a kitchen party. \nThis all-ages\, hands-on drop-in invites visitors to explore Acadian music traditions through fiddle-inspired sounds\, group music-making\, and the rhythmic pulse of spoon playing. \nDrop in and take part in lively\, collaborative music-making that shows how rhythm\, movement\, and song bring people together. \nPlayLab is a hands-on sound playground where young visitors can discover how music works. With interactive stations that feature strings\, wind\, percussion\, and electronic instruments\, kids experiment with the building blocks of sound—pitch\, volume\, timbre\, and vibration. Pluck a string\, strike a drum\, blow into an organ\, or shape sound on a synth to hear how instruments create their unique voices. Designed for curiosity and creativity\, PlayLab encourages visitors to listen closely\, explore freely\, and learn how musicians turn sound into music. \nPlayLab is made possible with support from the Alberta Museums Association and the Radomski Foundation.

SUMMARY:Synth Soundbath: Alesis Andromeda A6
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Studio Bell\, home of the National Music Centre\, for Synth Soundbath\, a new monthly series exploring the intersection of wellness and music technology. \nPart educational experience\, part immersive listening session\, the program invites participants to engage with sound as both a scientific phenomenon and a deeply personal\, sensory experience. \nThis is not your typical soundbath. Each hour-long session begins with an educational deep dive into the history of music in wellness practices\, the science of sound\, and the technology behind an iconic synthesizer from NMC’s collection. Participants are then invited to get comfortable and settle in for the soundbath portion of the experience. \nHeld on the last Sunday of each month\, each session spotlights a different synthesizer from NMC’s collection. Often associated with experimental music rather than wellness practices\, synthesizers offer a unique lens into the science of sound and the body’s response to vibration\, expanding how we listen\, feel\, and understand music’s role in well-being. \nThis session features the Alesis Andromeda A6\, released in 2000. One of the last great flagship analog synthesizers\, the Andromeda combines 16 voices of true analog synthesis with a remarkably deep and expressive sound engine. Capable of producing everything from warm\, evolving pads to shimmering ambient textures\, its expansive sonic palette makes it an ideal instrument for immersive listening. \nGuests are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, blanket\, or anything that helps them get comfortable as they settle in.
