SUMMARY:Arthur Jafa: Love is the Message\, the Message is Death
DESCRIPTION:Arthur Jafa is an artist and filmmaker. Across three decades\, Jafa has developed a dynamic practice comprising films\, artefacts\, and happenings that reference and question the universal and specific articulations of Black being. Underscoring the many facets of Jafa’s practice is a recurring question: how can visual media\, such as objects\, static and moving images\, transmit the equivalent “power\, beauty and alienation” embedded within forms of Black music in U.S. culture?

SUMMARY:Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin de Burca: "Swinguerra"
DESCRIPTION:For over a decade\, Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin de Burca have developed a collaborative practice across cinema\, visual arts and performance. Their videos and installations are created in dialogue with diverse artists and collectives\, combining documentary strategies with narrative layers of fantasy and allegory. \nThrough processes of listening and shared experience\, direction\, script\, costume\, and soundtrack are collectively conceived with each project’s participants. This horizontal methodology challenges dominant representational forms by revealing tensions between popular cultural practices and hegemonic structures of visibility. Their work offers a critical reflection on the performative gesture and its social\, aesthetic\, and political reverberations.

SUMMARY:Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin de Burca: Swinguerra
DESCRIPTION:Developed in close collaboration with three competitive dance groups from the peripheries of Recife\, Brazil\, Swinguerra (2019) celebrates music and dance as powerful forms of self-definition\, solidarity\, and resistance to the status quo. \nPresented at the Brazilian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale\, the work follows performers – many of whom are Black\, transgender\, nonbinary\, or queer – as they rehearse and compete in dance styles including swingueira\, brega funk\, and passinho da maloca. \nRooted in the cultural traditions of Northeast Brazil while also evolving and responding to contemporary urban life\, these forms of movement and competition become vehicles through which dancers assert identity\, forge community\, and imagine new possibilities for belonging.
