There’s something special about New Year’s Eve in downtown Calgary. The glow of city lights along the river, the sound of music drifting through the winter air, the buzz of people gathering to celebrate. New Year’s Eve is a night where the city truly comes alive.
Whether you’re planning an early evening with family, a cozy night out or a full countdown-to-midnight party, downtown offers plenty of ways to feel festive, connected and excited to welcome 2026.
Here’s how to make the most of New Year’s Eve in the heart of our city.
Celebrations & Fireworks
Calgary residents and visitors come together on New Year’s Eve at The City’s official celebration! Beginning at 8 p.m., Eau Claire Plaza and Prince’s Island Park transform into gathering places for free, family-friendly fun – featuring live entertainment, interactive activities, local food trucks and an outdoor skating party.
As the clock strikes midnight, a dazzling fireworks show will launch from Prince’s Island Park, perfectly timed to music on CJSW 90.9FM. The display can be enjoyed from both celebration sites or watched from home via livestream.
To make getting around easier, free shuttle buses will run from 9 p.m. on December 31 to 1:30 a.m. on January 1, with buses arriving approximately every 45 minutes along two designated routes.
Family-Friendly Activities
New Year’s Eve isn’t just about staying up late. For families and early-evening celebrators, there are plenty of ways to soak up the festive atmosphere before midnight.
Many downtown venues are hosting early events, activities and dining options perfect for families looking to celebrate together. Here are a few family-friendly classics:
