SUMMARY:Elzbieta Krawecka – A Space that Remembers
DESCRIPTION:A Space That Remembers reflects my belief that places can inhabit us as much as we inhabit them. “Through painting\, I seek to create spaces where observation\, memory\, emotion\, and imagination come together—spaces that invite us to look closely\, to reflect\, and to consider what a landscape carries\, what it has witnessed\, and what we carry with us”\, Elzbieta. \nShow from October 15 to November 4\, 2026. \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, October 17th from 2-5 PM; artist in attendance.

SUMMARY:Jack Bishop: In The Pines
DESCRIPTION:Newzones is pleased to present In The Pines\, a solo exhibition of new work by Canadian contemporary painter\, Jack Bishop. \nIn these new paintings segments of the Trans-Canada are like a topiary\, where the tree lines carve out an ornamental landscape the highway cuts through. The liminal space through the wilderness in a commute. For a fleeting moment the light changes\, and the familiar surroundings emote a sense of nostalgia\, romanticism or déjà vu. \nInspired by scrubby roadside foliage\, these landscapes reimagine surrounding ditches and medians into nuanced spaces where colour\, light\, and gesture take centre stage. Moving away from realism and photographic references\, the paintings embrace an intuitive approach from memory and lived experience. The tree lines become embellished forms\, while thick impasto and fluorescent palettes activate the painted surface\, creating landscapes that oscillate between figuration\, abstraction\, and sensation.

SUMMARY:Jane Jin Kaisen: Burial of This Order
DESCRIPTION:Burial of This Order brings together three works by Jane Jin Kaisen that underscore her ongoing interest in ritual\, collectivity\, capitalist critique\, and the possibilities of social and political transgressions. \nThe exhibition centres on Kaisen’s titular video installation (2022)\, through which the audience is invited to follow a funerary procession gathered to ceremoniously bury a world order built upon hierarchy and division. The social actors called on to perform this duty\, including artists\, poets and activists\, transgress traditional ceremonial practices indicating that this ritualized enactment is a funeral without grievers\, assembled to dismantle unlivable structures\, rather than lament current conditions. \nThe exhibition’s central work is accompanied by Sorrow Waters This Land (2024) and Dokkaebi (2024). The former focuses on the setting for the procession – a derelict resort on Jeju Island that was abandoned following the IMF financial crisis of the 1990s\, now persisting as a crumbling ruin of capitalism. The latter features powerful Dokkaebi deities from Korean folklore\, unpredictable tricksters who dance suggestively through the space\, haunting or perhaps compelling the procession.

SUMMARY:Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin de Burca: "Swinguerra"
DESCRIPTION:For over a decade\, Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin de Burca have developed a collaborative practice across cinema\, visual arts and performance. Their videos and installations are created in dialogue with diverse artists and collectives\, combining documentary strategies with narrative layers of fantasy and allegory. \nThrough processes of listening and shared experience\, direction\, script\, costume\, and soundtrack are collectively conceived with each project’s participants. This horizontal methodology challenges dominant representational forms by revealing tensions between popular cultural practices and hegemonic structures of visibility. Their work offers a critical reflection on the performative gesture and its social\, aesthetic\, and political reverberations.

Based in Chicago\, his practice explores race\, queer culture\, migration\, protest\, and other forms of collective movement. Seeking to create new spaces for agency and belonging\, Fernandes’ work often takes hybrid forms; part ballet\, part queer dance party\, part political protest\, while remaining grounded in collaboration and participation in order to find solidarity.

SUMMARY:Curtis Talwst Santiago: worlds\, worlds\, worlds
DESCRIPTION:worlds\, worlds\, worlds explores how stories are held and carried across the vestiges of history and memory. Rooted in a form of world-building where inherited imagination meets critical fabulation¹\, the exhibition celebrates polyphonic identities that negotiate different geographies across time\, weaving the material\, the fragmentary\, and the ever-evolving within storytelling. \nCentral to the Contemporary Calgary presentation is a focused survey of Santiago’s dioramas. Begun in 2008 and collectively known as the Infinity Series\, these intimate works move fluidly between personal memories of Caribbean community life: basement dance parties\, the quintessential barbershop\, figures dreaming in the grass\, and broader collective histories such as migration crises and the rise of territorialism in its many forms. These scenes are portrayed as something precious and deliberately sheltered\, worlds that can be held in the palm of a hand\, inviting careful observation of details often overlooked.

SUMMARY:Arthur Jafa: Love is the Message\, the Message is Death
DESCRIPTION:Arthur Jafa is an artist and filmmaker. Across three decades\, Jafa has developed a dynamic practice comprising films\, artefacts\, and happenings that reference and question the universal and specific articulations of Black being. Underscoring the many facets of Jafa’s practice is a recurring question: how can visual media\, such as objects\, static and moving images\, transmit the equivalent “power\, beauty and alienation” embedded within forms of Black music in U.S. culture?

SUMMARY:Houdini's Legacy: Calgary's Masters of Magic
DESCRIPTION:One hundred years ago\, Harry Houdini took his final bow. On October 23\, Calgary’s finest magicians gather to mark the centenary of his death; an evening of sleight of hand\, illusion and impossible escapes staged in his honour. The night builds to its climax with Dayle Krall\, “The Houdini Girl\,” performing the Water Cell Escape: shackled\, inverted and submerged\, with only seconds of air and no margin for error. \nHoudini died on Hallowe’en\, 1926. Some anniversaries are marked with a minute’s silence. This one is marked by holding your breath.

SUMMARY:Evil Dead The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Five college students visit an abandoned cabin in the woods and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It’s up to Ash (a housewares employee\, turned demon-killing hero)\, and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. \nA wildly entertaining Canadian adaptation of the cult-classic horror comedy\, Evil Dead The Musical explodes onto the Martha Cohen Theatre stage this Halloween season. Blood\, jokes\, cheesy effects\, and unforgettable musical numbers\, Evil Dead The Musical is pure comedy from start to finish\, and unlike any other live show out there. Expect outrageous laughs\, over-the-top gore\, and a thrilling theatrical experience. \nAudience advisory: Suggested for ages 16+. Strong language\, sexual themes\, comedic violence (including gun violence)\, and gore. The tone of the production is comedic\, however if you experience adverse effects at the sight of blood\, we do not recommend you attend this show.

Underscoring the many facets of Jafa’s practice is a recurring question: how can visual media\, such as objects\, static and moving images\, transmit the equivalent “power\, beauty and alienation” embedded within forms of Black music in U.S. culture?

SUMMARY:Synth Soundbath: Buchla 200e
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Studio Bell\, home of the National Music Centre\, for Synth Soundbath\, a new monthly series exploring the intersection of wellness and music technology. \nPart educational experience\, part immersive listening session\, the program invites participants to engage with sound as both a scientific phenomenon and a deeply personal\, sensory experience. \nThis is not your typical soundbath. Each hour-long session begins with an educational deep dive into the history of music in wellness practices\, the science of sound\, and the technology behind an iconic synthesizer from NMC’s collection. Participants are then invited to get comfortable and settle in for the soundbath portion of the experience. \nHeld on the last Sunday of each month\, each session spotlights a different synthesizer from NMC’s collection. Often associated with experimental music rather than wellness practices\, synthesizers offer a unique lens into the science of sound and the body’s response to vibration\, expanding how we listen\, feel\, and understand music’s role in well-being. \nThis session features the Buchla 200e\, a modern modular synthesizer system introduced in 2004 and rooted in Don Buchla’s pioneering 1970s-era designs. The 200e retains a largely analog signal path while incorporating modern hybrid enhancements such as MIDI control\, patch memory\, internal routing systems\, and expanded voltage-controlled parameters. \nThe 200e reflects Buchla’s ongoing commitment to experimental design and non-traditional approaches to synthesis. Unlike keyboard-driven instruments\, it emphasizes gesture\, control voltage\, and timbral exploration over conventional melody and harmony. Its legacy is closely tied to West Coast synthesis and modular sound design\, and to a broader lineage of electronic music that treats sound as a physical\, expressive medium. \nGuests are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, blanket\, or anything that helps them get comfortable as they settle in.

Underscoring the many facets of Jafa’s practice is a recurring question: how can visual media\, such as objects\, static and moving images\, transmit the equivalent “power\, beauty and alienation” embedded within forms of Black music in U.S. culture?
