SUMMARY:NMC Presents: Sexsmith Sings Lightfoot
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the enduring songs of Gordon Lightfoot with acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith. \nSexsmith Sings Lightfoot is a heartfelt tribute from one master craftsman to another\, featuring beautifully interpreted selections from Lightfoot’s catalogue\, alongside personal reflections on the music that helped shape Sexsmith’s own songwriting journey. Join us for a moving night of music\, memory\, and national pride as we honour a legacy that continues to inspire generations. \nBe sure to read Ron Sexsmith’s letter that describes the influence Gordon Lightfoot had on his life and songwriting\, and gives deeper meaning to this special performance. \nAbout Ron Sexsmith\nRon Sexsmith is a three-time JUNO Award-winning songwriter from Ontario. He has written and recorded an extensive and acclaimed catalog of studio albums and original songs\, beginning with his self titled debut in 1995. Ron released his eighteenth studio album in August 2025. In the past few decades as a headlining artist\, Ron has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world\, such as Massey Hall\, Carnegie Hall\, London’s Royal Albert Hall\, as well as The London Palladium. \nAbout Gordon Lightfoot\nGordon Lightfoot (1938–2023) was one of Canada’s most celebrated singer-songwriters. Emerging from Toronto’s folk scene in the 1960s\, he helped define the folk-pop sound with introspective lyrics and melodic craftsmanship that earned him international acclaim. His songs often captured themes of love\, history\, and the Canadian landscape\, resonating with audiences for decades. Over a career spanning more than 60 years\, Lightfoot received numerous honors\, including multiple JUNO and Grammy Awards\, companion of the Order of Canada\, Governor General’s Award\, and induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame\, cementing his legacy as a foundational figure in North American folk music.

SUMMARY:The Sound of Music
DESCRIPTION:Join us for one of the most beloved musicals of all time. Directed by Robert Wise\, The Sound of Music is a sweeping\, heartfelt\, and enduring celebration of family\, resilience\, and the transformative power of song. The story follows Maria\, a spirited young woman sent to serve as governess to the seven children of the widowed Captain von Trapp. Through music\, kindness\, and a little bit of rebellion\, she brings warmth and joy back into their regimented household — even as the shadow of war begins to fall over Austria. From “Do-Re-Mi” to “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain\,” this iconic Hollywood classic continues to inspire audiences across generations. Whether you’re revisiting it or experiencing it for the first time\, this is a film that fills the theatre — and your heart. \nEvent Details:\nLobby Doors: Open at 5:30 PM\nFeature Film Screening: 7:00 PM\nFood: Come early and grab dinner in the lobby! Uncle Fatih’s Pizza will be serving up their signature slices — made from healthy\, freshly prepared dough and rustic\, never-frozen ingredients. Expect veggie-forward\, big-energy pizza your taste buds won’t forget.\nBar Feature: The Edelweiss Mule is a floral\, elevated twist on the traditional mule — blending vodka\, elderflower liqueur\, fresh lime\, and crisp ginger beer for a drink that’s bright\, refreshing\, and just a little bit enchanting.\nTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMMgcAqOYbI \nBring your family. Bring your friends. And get ready to sing along. \nThe GRAND uses closed captions for accessibility purposes. Thank you for your consideration and understanding!

SUMMARY:A Place Where I Belong // An event about disability & sexuality in Calgary
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centre for Sexuality\, Story Money Impact for a screening of A Place Where I Belong\, a film by Rheanna Toy. \nFacing a system that fails to recognize their full humanity\, six 2SLGBTQIA+ people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) fight for visibility\, love\, and freedom through Connecting Queer Communities (CQC)\, a radical program that’s at risk of disappearing. \nThrough CQC\, the protagonists find safety and solidarity while exploring their sexual desire and gender. People with I/DD are often excluded from queer community by their caregivers’ discomfort with their sexuality\, segregated from society to the point where they don’t have the experience to describe their queer identity. CQC models for the world how inclusivity can transform lives so that everyone can find a place where they belong. \nFollowing the screening\, there will be a Q&A session with the director and local experts!

SUMMARY:Wordfest presents Calgary’s Canada Reads Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Our yearly celebration of CBC’s Canada Reads is one of our liveliest showcases and this year\, it’s too hot to handle. We couldn’t resist the allure of putting the hockey book—Searching for Terry Punchout penned by Calgary’s Tyler Hellard—in “forced proximity” to the romance read—the debut It’s Different This Time by Emmy Award-winning producer Joss Richard. Will they or won’t they… be the author of the last book standing when CBC’s great Canadian book debate heats up April 13-16? Only their celebrity champions—YouTube personality and podcaster Steve “Dangle” Glynn and BookTok star Morgann Book—know for sure. We’ll have all four on the Memorial Park stage sharing insider insights about what makes these novels heavyweight contenders. Shelley Youngblut will host\, teasing out secrets and strategies from the author-champion text threads. And if your secret crush asks when your English got so good\, you can answer\, “I come to Wordfest shows!” \nThis event includes an audience Q & A and book signing fuelled by Owl’s Nest Books.
