SUMMARY:Jane Jin Kaisen: Burial of This Order
DESCRIPTION:Burial of This Order brings together three works by Jane Jin Kaisen that underscore her ongoing interest in ritual\, collectivity\, capitalist critique\, and the possibilities of social and political transgressions. \nThe exhibition centres on Kaisen’s titular video installation (2022)\, through which the audience is invited to follow a funerary procession gathered to ceremoniously bury a world order built upon hierarchy and division. The social actors called on to perform this duty\, including artists\, poets and activists\, transgress traditional ceremonial practices indicating that this ritualized enactment is a funeral without grievers\, assembled to dismantle unlivable structures\, rather than lament current conditions. \nThe exhibition’s central work is accompanied by Sorrow Waters This Land (2024) and Dokkaebi (2024). The former focuses on the setting for the procession – a derelict resort on Jeju Island that was abandoned following the IMF financial crisis of the 1990s\, now persisting as a crumbling ruin of capitalism. The latter features powerful Dokkaebi deities from Korean folklore\, unpredictable tricksters who dance suggestively through the space\, haunting or perhaps compelling the procession.

SUMMARY:Samantha Walrod: Off The Beaten Path
DESCRIPTION:Newzones is thrilled to present Off the Beaten Path\, an upcoming solo exhibition of new work by Albertan contemporary artist Samantha Walrod. \nOff the Beaten Path considers how humans view and interact with wildlife in the Canadian wilderness from a “close” distance. Motorists and hikers observe animals from cars and trails while the animals watch in return. Bears\, elk\, and wolves are depicted on the edge of the wilderness\, adjacent to roads and thoroughfares\, visible to humans before disappearing onto paths less accessible to human transportation. Walrod’s artwork represents a fleeting moment of human/animal interaction while observing the essential but shrinking distance between human/animal habitats. \nSamantha Walrod’s work is influenced by similarities and differences between imagined and reconstructed environments. She uses many layers of paint\, collage\, photography and inks\, as tactility is a very important element of her practice. Images are incorporated with collage and digital technologies\, while maintaining the exploration of paint. In reconstructing disparate images from various sources including art history\, popular culture and her own photos\, Walrod addresses the cultural construction of nature.

SUMMARY:Calgary Institute for the Humanities 8th Annual LGBTQ2S+ Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Calgary Public Library\, UCalgary Alumni\, and the Calgary Foundation\, and as part of Calgary Pride Week\, the Calgary Institute for the Humanities will host Dr. Howard Chiang\, University of California\, Santa Barbara\, who will be giving a talk titled “Decolonizing Transgender History: The View from the Asia Pacific.” \nDr. Chiang’s work asks: Does Asia have a trans history? What does it mean to scrutinize the politics of transness in Chinese-speaking societies? This lecture challenges both the assumption that gender nonconforming figures did not exist historically and the idea that the Western category of transgender delivers the best framework for understanding their experience. To remedy some of the most salient flaws of historical inquiry\, this talk analyzes key exemplars from the Sinophone Pacific in decolonial terms. \nDr. Howard Chiang holds the Lai Ho & Wu Cho-liu Endowed Chair in Taiwan Studies at the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, where he is also Professor of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies (by appointment)\, Professor of History and Feminist Studies (by courtesy)\, and Director of the Center for Taiwan Studies. He is the author of two award-winning monographs: After Eunuchs: Science\, Medicine\, and the Transformation of Sex in Modern China (Columbia University Press\, 2018) and Transtopia in the Sinophone Pacific (Columbia University Press\, 2021). He is a laureate of the 2026 Dan David Prize in History.

SUMMARY:Miranda Martini\, Singer-songwriter
DESCRIPTION:Miranda Martini is a musician\, writer\, composer and sound designer. \nHer recent solo album\, The Historian\, was featured on the CBC Radio show Key of A as part of their “Best of 2025” episode\, showcasing the best new music out of Alberta last year. The album also charted at #8 on CJSW Folk/Country/Blues charts for 2025\, and was featured in the Alberta Views Magazine 2026 Albums Guide. \nMultidisciplinary artist Miranda Martini shares songs off of her new album The Historian—her first solo album in 10 years—which meditates on her connection to the land\, her ancestors\, and the uneasy mantle of “singer-songwriter.” Freely blending bluegrass and R&B/soul\, The Historian pays tribute to Martini’s Black prairie ancestors\, particularly those of the Black prairie communities of Maidstone and Campsie from which Martini descends. \nAs she says in the album liner notes\, Martini wrote the title track to honour three historians: her great-great-aunt Daisy Williams\, who was the keeper of the family’s stories; her great uncle Phillip Risby\, an artist whose paintings are a mirror of a life lived as a black man growing up in North America; and her mother\, writer and historian Cheryl Foggo\, who ignited in Martini a passion for using art to understand the world and her place in it. \nOnstage\, Martini uses her molasses-rich voice and gift for storytelling to invite audiences into her living room\, making magic with crowds of 15 people or 500. \nThis is the third of four concerts in a Series of Emerging Artists Concerts during 2026 that is generously sponsored by:
