SUMMARY:The Hobbit
DESCRIPTION:Bilbo Baggins is swept from his cozy Hobbit Hole and into a perilous quest across Middle-earth to help a band of dwarves reclaim their home under the Lonely Mountain from a treacherous dragon. Faced with trolls\, goblins\, elves\, giant spiders and the mysterious creature Gollum\, Bilbo discovers his own resourcefulness and courage\, and grows into an unlikely hero\, proving indispensable to the Company as their journey culminates in a great battle that determines the very fate of the mountain and its inhabitants. \nBased on J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous tale\, The Hobbit is a not-to-be-missed magical journey for the holiday season. This imaginative Canadian adaptation brings audiences into a fantastical world of adventure\, courage\, and discovery. \nAudience advisory: The wider world of Middle-earth is filled with beings quite unfamiliar to many young hobbits – a few of which some eyes might find frightening – such as goblins\, trolls and (gulp) even a dragon. This show also features staged battles and magic\, as well as some theatrical effects (water-based stage haze and fog\, flashing lights). And while we recognize that every young theatregoer is different\, our general suggested age for this production is 7+.

SUMMARY:Jane Jin Kaisen: Burial of This Order
DESCRIPTION:Burial of This Order brings together three works by Jane Jin Kaisen that underscore her ongoing interest in ritual\, collectivity\, capitalist critique\, and the possibilities of social and political transgressions. \nThe exhibition centres on Kaisen’s titular video installation (2022)\, through which the audience is invited to follow a funerary procession gathered to ceremoniously bury a world order built upon hierarchy and division. The social actors called on to perform this duty\, including artists\, poets and activists\, transgress traditional ceremonial practices indicating that this ritualized enactment is a funeral without grievers\, assembled to dismantle unlivable structures\, rather than lament current conditions. \nThe exhibition’s central work is accompanied by Sorrow Waters This Land (2024) and Dokkaebi (2024). The former focuses on the setting for the procession – a derelict resort on Jeju Island that was abandoned following the IMF financial crisis of the 1990s\, now persisting as a crumbling ruin of capitalism. The latter features powerful Dokkaebi deities from Korean folklore\, unpredictable tricksters who dance suggestively through the space\, haunting or perhaps compelling the procession.

SUMMARY:Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin de Burca: "Swinguerra"
DESCRIPTION:For over a decade\, Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin de Burca have developed a collaborative practice across cinema\, visual arts and performance. Their videos and installations are created in dialogue with diverse artists and collectives\, combining documentary strategies with narrative layers of fantasy and allegory. \nThrough processes of listening and shared experience\, direction\, script\, costume\, and soundtrack are collectively conceived with each project’s participants. This horizontal methodology challenges dominant representational forms by revealing tensions between popular cultural practices and hegemonic structures of visibility. Their work offers a critical reflection on the performative gesture and its social\, aesthetic\, and political reverberations.

SUMMARY:Brendan Fernandes: Other Moves
DESCRIPTION:Brendan Fernandes is an internationally recognized Canadian artist working at the intersection of dance and visual art. Based in Chicago\, his practice explores race\, queer culture\, migration\, protest\, and other forms of collective movement. Seeking to create new spaces for agency and belonging\, Fernandes’ work often takes hybrid forms; part ballet\, part queer dance party\, part political protest\, while remaining grounded in collaboration and participation in order to find solidarity.

SUMMARY:Arthur Jafa: Love is the Message\, the Message is Death
DESCRIPTION:Arthur Jafa is an artist and filmmaker. Across three decades\, Jafa has developed a dynamic practice comprising films\, artefacts\, and happenings that reference and question the universal and specific articulations of Black being. Underscoring the many facets of Jafa’s practice is a recurring question: how can visual media\, such as objects\, static and moving images\, transmit the equivalent “power\, beauty and alienation” embedded within forms of Black music in U.S. culture?
