SUMMARY:Book Launch: Feminist Making\, Doing\, and Sensing
DESCRIPTION:This event is a celebration of the new collection\, *Feminist Making\, Doing\, and Sensing: Experiments in Philosophy*\, published in July by Duke University Press. Ada Jaarsma\, co-editor of the collection\, will facilitate interactive activities and conversation that draw out the embodied\, creative\, and collaborative aspects of feminist making. The gathering will be moderated by Wendi Adamek\, who holds a chair in Buddhist Studies at the University of Calgary. \nAuthors: \nAda Jaarsma is professor of Philosophy at Mount Royal University\, where she teaches feminist philosophy\, existentialism and queer studies. \nWendi Adamek is professor and Numata Chair in Buddhist Studies at the University of Calgary\, where she teaches Buddhist ethics\, feminist systems theory\, and medieval Chinese Buddhism. \nAbout the book: \nPlacing pressure on what it means to “do” feminist philosophy\, Feminist Making\, Doing\, and Sensing offers an innovative and critical rethinking of feminist philosophical practice and feminist philosophy as a disciplinary field of thought. The collection raises questions about how disciplines are made\, how philosophy gets done\, and the collaborative nature of thinking. Seeking to decenter disciplinary norms about content\, authority\, and belonging\, this collection disrupts the status quo of feminist philosophy through its insistence on formal experimentation and creative methods as well as its refusal to take philosophy and its disciplinary attachments at face value. The essays argue for ways of thinking\, making\, and doing philosophy that are participatory\, relational\, somatic\, affective\, sonorous\, and sensorial\, often looking to experimental and art-based practices such as film\, music\, poetry\, comedy\, crocheting\, and more. Meant to encourage a collaborative dialogue with readers\, several essays conclude with prompts\, exercises\, and activities\, inviting readers to participate in creative philosophical making alongside their own practices.

SUMMARY:Jingle Cone Keychain Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever heard the twinkling of the jingle dress and wanted to know how they’re made? The jingle cones behind the iconic sound have been made from repurposed and recycled materials since at least the 18th century. Historically used as decoration on clothing and jewelry\, now they typically adorn beautiful jingle dresses at powwows. \nIn this workshop\, Saulteaux-Métis artist Rey-J Horsefall and Métis artist Arlan LaVallee-Nairn will teach guests the historical and modern Indigenous use of jingle cones. Using metalsmithing and cold smithing techniques\, Rey-J and Arlan will walk you through the hands-on process of cutting and shaping jingle cones to create a unique jingle cone keychain. \nWorkshop includes materials\, instruction\, and admission to The Confluence Cultural Centre.
