SUMMARY:Otipemisiwak Fantasy
DESCRIPTION:In Otipemisiwak Fantasy\, Riel Starr explores Métis culture through an Indigiqueer perspective. Starr unapologetically conceptualizes Métis futurism through traditionally crafted contemporary objects in order to honour their own personal connection to their culture\, the land\, and the survivance of historical Two-Spiritness. \nOpening reception: October 23rd\, 2026\, from 6:30 to 9 pm \nRiel Starr will give an exhibition tour\, starting at 6:30 pm. \nImage: Otipemisiwak Fantasy. SUMMARY:Jane Jin Kaisen: Burial of This Order
DESCRIPTION:Burial of This Order brings together three works by Jane Jin Kaisen that underscore her ongoing interest in ritual\, collectivity\, capitalist critique\, and the possibilities of social and political transgressions. \nThe exhibition centres on Kaisen’s titular video installation (2022)\, through which the audience is invited to follow a funerary procession gathered to ceremoniously bury a world order built upon hierarchy and division. The social actors called on to perform this duty\, including artists\, poets and activists\, transgress traditional ceremonial practices indicating that this ritualized enactment is a funeral without grievers\, assembled to dismantle unlivable structures\, rather than lament current conditions. \nThe exhibition’s central work is accompanied by Sorrow Waters This Land (2024) and Dokkaebi (2024). The former focuses on the setting for the procession – a derelict resort on Jeju Island that was abandoned following the IMF financial crisis of the 1990s\, now persisting as a crumbling ruin of capitalism. The latter features powerful Dokkaebi deities from Korean folklore\, unpredictable tricksters who dance suggestively through the space\, haunting or perhaps compelling the procession.

SUMMARY:Curtis Talwst Santiago: worlds\, worlds\, worlds
DESCRIPTION:worlds\, worlds\, worlds explores how stories are held and carried across the vestiges of history and memory. Rooted in a form of world-building where inherited imagination meets critical fabulation¹\, the exhibition celebrates polyphonic identities that negotiate different geographies across time\, weaving the material\, the fragmentary\, and the ever-evolving within storytelling. \nCentral to the Contemporary Calgary presentation is a focused survey of Santiago’s dioramas. Begun in 2008 and collectively known as the Infinity Series\, these intimate works move fluidly between personal memories of Caribbean community life: basement dance parties\, the quintessential barbershop\, figures dreaming in the grass\, and broader collective histories such as migration crises and the rise of territorialism in its many forms. These scenes are portrayed as something precious and deliberately sheltered\, worlds that can be held in the palm of a hand\, inviting careful observation of details often overlooked.

SUMMARY:Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn
DESCRIPTION:Sam Raimi’s 1987 sequel takes everything that made the original Evil Dead so strange and terrifying and turns the dial all the way up: one isolated cabin\, one very bad night\, a possessed girlfriend\, a chainsaw\, an infamous shotgun\, a room full of things that probably shouldn’t be moving — and Bruce Campbell giving one of the great physical performances in horror. \nPart horror film\, part slapstick comedy and completely its own thing\, Evil Dead II is the kind of movie that built a cult following because people kept coming back to it. It’s inventive\, ridiculous\, genuinely creepy and packed with the kind of practical effects and manic energy that are even better when you’re watching it with a room full of people who know exactly what’s coming. \nIf you’re seeing Alberta Theatre Projects’ Evil Dead The Musical this season\, this is a pretty great excuse to keep the night going.

SUMMARY:Wordfest Presents Anita Rau Badami
DESCRIPTION:After far too long an absence\, the writer and visual artist Anita Rau Badami makes a triumphant return to Calgary with her highly anticipated new novel—fifteen years in the writing!—Asha in Her Garden. Her previous novel\, The Hero’s Walk\, was a Canada-Reads finalist defended by actor Vinay Virmani who\, in this clip\, described Badami’s writing as timeless in its nuanced exploration of family dynamics and intergenerational conflict. We can’t wait to experience Badami’s storytelling gifts first-hand in this conversation\, hosted by Kirti Bhadresa\, which includes an audience Q & A and book signing\, fueled by Owls Nest Books. You can order copies of her new book\, plus her award-winning backlist\, here.

SUMMARY:Evil Dead The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Five college students visit an abandoned cabin in the woods and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It’s up to Ash (a housewares employee\, turned demon-killing hero)\, and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. \nA wildly entertaining Canadian adaptation of the cult-classic horror comedy\, Evil Dead The Musical explodes onto the Martha Cohen Theatre stage this Halloween season. Blood\, jokes\, cheesy effects\, and unforgettable musical numbers\, Evil Dead The Musical is pure comedy from start to finish\, and unlike any other live show out there. Expect outrageous laughs\, over-the-top gore\, and a thrilling theatrical experience. \nAudience advisory: Suggested for ages 16+. Strong language\, sexual themes\, comedic violence (including gun violence)\, and gore. The tone of the production is comedic\, however if you experience adverse effects at the sight of blood\, we do not recommend you attend this show.
