SUMMARY:Samantha Walrod: Off The Beaten Path
DESCRIPTION:Newzones is thrilled to present Off the Beaten Path\, an upcoming solo exhibition of new work by Albertan contemporary artist Samantha Walrod. \nOff the Beaten Path considers how humans view and interact with wildlife in the Canadian wilderness from a “close” distance. Motorists and hikers observe animals from cars and trails while the animals watch in return. Bears\, elk\, and wolves are depicted on the edge of the wilderness\, adjacent to roads and thoroughfares\, visible to humans before disappearing onto paths less accessible to human transportation. Walrod’s artwork represents a fleeting moment of human/animal interaction while observing the essential but shrinking distance between human/animal habitats. \nSamantha Walrod’s work is influenced by similarities and differences between imagined and reconstructed environments. She uses many layers of paint\, collage\, photography and inks\, as tactility is a very important element of her practice. Images are incorporated with collage and digital technologies\, while maintaining the exploration of paint. In reconstructing disparate images from various sources including art history\, popular culture and her own photos\, Walrod addresses the cultural construction of nature.

SUMMARY:Jane Jin Kaisen: Burial of This Order
DESCRIPTION:Burial of This Order brings together three works by Jane Jin Kaisen that underscore her ongoing interest in ritual\, collectivity\, capitalist critique\, and the possibilities of social and political transgressions. \nThe exhibition centres on Kaisen’s titular video installation (2022)\, through which the audience is invited to follow a funerary procession gathered to ceremoniously bury a world order built upon hierarchy and division. The social actors called on to perform this duty\, including artists\, poets and activists\, transgress traditional ceremonial practices indicating that this ritualized enactment is a funeral without grievers\, assembled to dismantle unlivable structures\, rather than lament current conditions. \nThe exhibition’s central work is accompanied by Sorrow Waters This Land (2024) and Dokkaebi (2024). The former focuses on the setting for the procession – a derelict resort on Jeju Island that was abandoned following the IMF financial crisis of the 1990s\, now persisting as a crumbling ruin of capitalism. The latter features powerful Dokkaebi deities from Korean folklore\, unpredictable tricksters who dance suggestively through the space\, haunting or perhaps compelling the procession.

SUMMARY:Calgary on Purpose: Fall 2026
DESCRIPTION:Calgary’s evenings of connection and conversation return this September. \nIn this time of stress and confusion we value the opportunity to gather in community\, delighting in the good will and remarkable talents of our neighbors. Each of us has an opportunity to contribute to building an even better Calgary and it can only be done together. \nCalgary on Purpose evenings promise to leave you thinking about how you can purposely help to build a better\, more connected Calgary. Come to our September 9 event to be energized by delight\, conversation\, and community connection. \nLoosely themed “Ties That Bind\,” September’s event will feature the very funny and insightful author Will Ferguson; Calgary-based country-pop artist Alexandria Hughes\, known for her soaring vocals\, genre-blending sound\, and engaging storytelling; and Katie Samoil\, an emergency nurse and aerospace physiology researcher who facilitates mass-casualty simulations across North America. \nOur esteemed emcee needs no introduction. Dave Kelly has been with Calgary on Purpose from the beginning and promises to once again get us howling and reflecting. He will share a personal story about the complexities of family life and what it can teach us about what’s possible in our beloved city. \nAs Dave describes it\, “These evenings are like a block party where we revel in the remarkable talents of our neighbours and in the goodwill that comes when we connect on purpose.” \nFREE to attend. Spots are limited. Pre-registeration required. \nGuests are welcome and encouraged to stay after the formal event to mingle and continue the conversation. Paid bar will be available. \nCalgary on Purpose events are gifts to our community. If you register for one of our evenings\, please make every effort to attend. If for some reason you can’t\, please give up your spot so that others can attend. You can release your ticket by following the process in your Eventbrite account. \nRush line policy: To help ensure a full house\, any unclaimed seats may be released to the rush line 10 minutes before the event begins. If you have reserved a ticket\, please arrive and check in at least 10 minutes before the event start time. After that time\, we cannot guarantee your seat.

SUMMARY:Improv 302: Story
DESCRIPTION:Improv 302: StoryThis is a six week course with sessions running 7:30-9:30 p.m. on the following Wednesdays:September 9\, 16\, 23\, 30; October 7\, 14. \nClasses are for students aged 18+ \nPlease register with your preferred name so we know who will be in the class and what to call you! \nPrerequisites: Improv 101 & 201\, or 30 hours of improv experience\, or equivalent. Email Jordan if you have questions about your level of improv. \nTelling effective and entertaining stories is what improvisers strive to do! A strong beginning\, surprising middle\, and satisfying ending are the equation to a great improvised story. Put your skills to work creating scenes your audience will love\, in this intermediate workshop. \nNote: If 13 or more registrations occur\, this class will be split into two separate classes running simultaneously in different rooms with different instructors. Students who register will be notified if this split occurs\, and will be given the option to indicate instructor and classmate preferences. \nInstructor (Class 1): Mark Laws \nA teacher by day\, performer by night: Mark (he/him) is excited to be your instructor! He started taking classes with The Kinkonauts in 2022 before being accepted into their Conservatory Programme that same year. He discovered that improv is a great way to build confidence\, find self-expression and create new neural pathways! Also that he likes to play pirates\, that kook! You may have seen him in Fringe Fest 2024’s Surprised by Love\, improvised film noir Secrets and Shadows\, Cage Match 2025-winning BassN’H\, and more! Known for his inclusivity\, self-deprecating wit\, and passion for the craft\, Mark hopes to create a safe space for his students to play games\, learn new skills\, and (most importantly) have fun!
