If you’re looking for the perfect way to embrace winter in downtown Calgary, lace up and head to Prince’s Island Park Lagoon for ice skating. Nestled at 4 St. and 1 Ave. S.W., this iconic spot has become the city’s ultimate skating destination! As soon as you arrive, you’re greeted by twinkling lights, cozy firepits and plenty of seating for warming up between laps. Whether you’re skating under a starry sky or soaking in the cheerful daytime atmosphere, Prince’s Island Park Lagoon is made for creating winter memories.

Calgary Skate Rentals
This season brings even more excitement: Calgary Skate Rentals has a space at Prince’s Island Park Lagoon, making it easier than ever to enjoy a spontaneous skate downtown. No skates, no problem! Just swing by during their regular hours (Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. – 9 p.m., Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.).
Free Skate Saturdays
And that’s not all! Until March 28, 2026, The City is launching Free Skate Saturdays at 2:00p.m. The first 50 skaters will receive free skate rentals, making it the perfect opportunity to bring friends, family or visiting guests for a wonderful afternoon on the ice.
Free Beginner Skating Lessons
If you’re new to skating or looking to build confidence, The City has you covered. Every Saturday from 2:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., The City is offering Free Beginner Skating Lessons until March 28, 2026. It’s a welcoming, supportive way to learn the basics and maybe even discover a new favourite winter hobby. Helmets are mandatory for anyone under 18 and strongly encouraged for adults. Calgary Skate Rentals has a limited supply, so bringing your own is the best way to ensure you’re ready to go.
What to bring
To make the most of your outdoor skating adventure, dress for the weather and be sure to bring:
- Skates (if you have your own)
- Helmet (mandatory for anyone under the age of 18 participating in the free skating lessons and highly encouraged for adults)
- Warm, cozy socks
- Mittens
- Snow pants
- A winter jacket
- A scarf for extra warmth
